How to know if my PAN is categorized as NRI with Income Tax?
It is crucial for NRIs to update their PAN status under the Non-Resident category with the Income Tax Department to keep their trading accounts active. Trading accounts linked to a PAN that has not been updated to reflect NRI status will be marked as "Not Permitted to Trade" by Exchanges. Once this restriction is applied, no trading or demat activities can be carried out in such accounts.
How to Check if Your PAN is Updated:
- Automatic NRI Status: If you have been filing your Income Tax Returns as an NRI, your PAN may already be marked under the NRI category.
- Visit the E-Portal: Go to the Income Tax E-Portal here.
- Verify PAN Status:
- Enter your PAN number and the mobile number where you wish to receive the OTP.
- Check the remark under "Indian Citizen." For NRIs, it should display either "X" or "N".
4. Resident Status Indication: If it is marked as "Y," your PAN is likely still categorized under Resident Status.
Note of Caution:
In some cases, PAN numbers categorized under "X" may still be marked as "Not Permitted to Trade." If this occurs, you may need to contact your Assessing Officer (AO). You can find your AO's email address by following the steps mentioned earlier. Write an email requesting the update of your PAN status, and include copies of your Passport, OCI/PIO Card, and PAN for reference.
